چکیده

"Home Plate", a combination bar, grill, and recreation center, is an 8000 ft2 single-story slab-ongrade building with a partial basement. Radon testing of each ground-contact room found elevated radon levels in seven of eight rooms (5.6 pCi/L to 13.4 pCi/L). Mitigation diagnostics determined that the installation of three active soil depressurization (ASD) systems would reduce the levels to <4 pCVL if the (-) 80 Pa shell differential pressure (DP) caused by the building's exhaust systems could be reduced to 5 8 Pa. In 2002, a phased approach to reduce the significant DP was implemented. This approach included installation of passive louvers and a prototype 5-ton supplemental air-makeup system. The approach was successful, with postmitigation results ranging from < 0.5 pCi/L to 2.0 pCVL.

Building Materials as a Significant Contributor to Indoor Radon Concentrations in a Large Apartment Complex Mitigation: Case Study

The Florida Department of Health conducted an investigation to address reported difficulties in mitigating some units of a large apartment complex in Florida. The complex houses over 300 one and two bedroom apartments in over 40 three-story concrete structure buildings. Initial mitigation work successfully mitigated many of the first floor units to levels below 3.5 pCV1 using Active Soil Depres...

Radon Mitigation Approach in a Laboratory Measurement Room

Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer, causing thousands of deaths annually. It can be a problem for people or animals in houses, workplaces, schools or any building. Therefore, its mitigation has become essential to avoid health problems and to prevent radon from interfering in radioactive measurements. This study describes the implementation of radon mitigation systems at a rad...

Observations of Pressure Differentials and Air Flow Rates Associated with Indoor Radon from Two Passive Radon Mitigation Vents in an Extended Gravel-bed Foundation-type Large Building

Discrete and continuous measurement of indoor radon concentrations, air flow rates, and pressure differentials for passive and active operational configurations of a passive radon control system were performed at the Biotechnology Research and Development Facility of the University of Florida, in Alachua County, Florida. The system was installed during construction and incorporated an extended ...

The U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development Overview of Current Radon Research

The Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory (AEERL) of EPA began a research program to develop and demonstrate radon mitigation alternatives in 1984. This program grew significantly in 1986 with the addition of a Congressional funding supplement. In 1989 a separate Radon Mitigation Branch was established within the Pollution Control Division of AEERL. Radon mitigation research within EPA...

Energy Losses and Operational Costs of Radon Mitigation Systems

Energy losses and operational costs of radon mitigation systems in typical locations within the various heating zones in the USA have been calculated that include a modeling of seasonal and daily temperature variations. Two types of energy losses are compared with the electrical energy consumption for various ventilators that will be presented graphically. These energy losses will also be compa...
